作品靈感源自 1997 年出版的《神奇的文字世界》中深受喜愛的彩色鋼筆插畫作品。瓦爾德史密斯深受儒勒凡爾納的探險小說的影響，創作出這篇神奇的兒童插畫故事，一位駕駛著太空船的外星人講述他降落在地球上，第一次接觸地球生物和各色物品的經歷。插圖主要以倫頓的城市風景為主題，以誇張的筆觸描繪出建築、機器，其中甚至還包括木製結構的 Liberty 百貨公司。
